Château of Versailles and the beginning’s of something

Walking through the hundreds of rooms at Château of Versailles, I couldn’t help but notice, the old, stuffy smell and the sound of squeaky, footsteps upon the ancient floors. So, I made a sound video and took close up shots of the wallpapers and other surfaces.

I mainly had a fascination with the “over the top” décor, decorative surfaces and patterns.

Below the surfaces of this show of power and extravagance, was a history of passion, debauchery, sex, treachery, brutality, corruption, torture and death. I imagined the exotic and beautiful people, the power of the Kings, the abuse of women, Marie Antoinette and the peasants who starved in villages.

I also was taken back to my childhood, when, I enjoyed being in my own little world creating, away from the real world. My mum used to make gorgeous clothes with beautiful fabrics and trimmings and I was given the leftover’s. I taught myself to make collage’s, wall hangings, to decorate my room from a very young age.

When I was older, I decorated my bedroom with scarves, scraps of fabric and tacked up old bedspreads, made from cotton and woven fringes. The bedspreads became a wallpaper backdrop for my bed that I made into a couch.

I made heaps of cushions and would sit for hours reading, Go Set and TV Week, magazines. The pop star posters were stuck onto the other 3 walls and ceiling.

I have a pile of vintage French fabrics and  papers and have been playing around with a few ideas and may look into having an arts residency, nearby in the future.

Collage Tutorial 4. Lafayette Pink

Warm Collage – Lafayette Pink
Thinking of my daughter today, who lives in Paris France. Last time I was there I experienced my first ever white Xmas. It snowed and snowed. We went to Galleries Lafayette but didn’t buy anything as it just too expensive but I did grab samples, advertising papers and junk for my art.

The colours that Winter were hot pinks with oranges. In this collage I wanted to capture the feeling of extravagance and contemporary Paris.

I painted the background of the canvas board with warm acrylic paint in yellow ochre , next , paper scraps from Galleries Lafayette in gold flourish, then orange and red velvet fabrics, squares of hand painted paper in hot pink, orange piece of French packaging and a little snow flake in hot pink created with a little punch I bought in Asnieres. Topped off with a little perfume bottle cut-out from Lafayette advertising. I also added some gold glitter paint in areas for sparkle.

Vintage French Dolls

A small collection vintage dolls I found at the Vanue market in Paris. Made between 1930 to 1950s.
A little Frenchman on wooden stilts wearing a berat, lambswool fur jacket and carrying a wooden bottle around his neck. A Provincial farmer carrying a staff to round up his sheep. Arms and legs moveable and he seems to be made from a very light papery celluloid material, not plastic. He stands a tiny 20cm. tall

Apparently the shepherds of the Landes region of southern France used to watch their flocks while standing on stilts to extend their field of vision, while townspeople often used them to traverse the soggy ground in their everyday activities.

” MAGUY”  Lorraine Poupees Folkloriques. Lorraine is very pretty with blonde hair, under a lace bonnet. She is wearing a lace apron over a mauve dress, edged in gold braid, petticoat underneath . Arms and legs moveable and she seems to be made from plastic.

A Spanish Senorita ,very pretty with her rouge cheeks jet black wavy hair, under a black lace veil. She is wearing a pinky -peach satin dress trimmed with black and gold lace. Arms and legs moveable and she is made from a very light papery celluloid material, not plastic. She stands a tiny 10cm. tall

A very pretty doll with jet her black hair, under a purple cotton bonnet, wearing a white apron over a purple satin dress edged with floral ribbon. The dress is lined. Arms and legs moveable and her eyes have eyelashes and they open and shut. She seems to be made from plastic. She stands a tiny 14cm.approx tall

A little Parcel from France

Merci beaucoup Valérie! …The gorgeous little parcel of vintage black & white goodies from France arrived today.

At first I didn’t want to touch anything as everything was so nicely arranged in the vintage DMC box

but then I slowly took out each item savouring each little thing.

Inside I found a wonderful collection of antique buttons, cottons , trims, black velvet ribbon, cotton trim. My favorite would have to be the bunch of wooden Art Nouveau buttons and the little pin holder

Oh and the stripey buttons…..

I may eventually use some in my wrist cuffs  and  handmade books but for now, I’ll just hoard, em to look at…

Thank you Valerie!
