I love making my French wall hangings. They are, all handmade using many creative processes and layers.

The base is made from thick board, covered with canvas. I then wrap it all with plaster cloth, to give texture and an old world feel. The whole lot is then painted with white Gesso paint.

Then several layers of acrylic paint are topped with, antique 1900s, French magazine scraps and vintage wallpapers. I then peeled, sanded and scraped back the surface to reveal the previous layers. Like peeling back years of wallpaper and paint layers in a derelict building.

For the next layer, I embellish with vintage elements, French fringe, tassel in peach pink and shredded vintage French laces and sheer fabric scraps. All finished of with some French trim to hang.

The final layers of embellishment can sometimes take weeks, until I find, or make, the right item I’m happy with.

They look great hanging in the boudoir, or any other room in the home.

Collage Tutorial 10. Torn Posters and Painted Papers.

IMG_20131119_143700s

I used many layers of a poster I found on the ground in Paris with handmade painted papers and acrylic gel. I sanded in between leaving torn paper and scratches in areas. My interest in this piece is the quality of the surface. During the process I made marks with permanent pens and acrylic paints.  Gluing on torn papers and tearing off with sanding.

Bonus Collage. Ugly Hair. 30 Days of Collage.

I had so much fun making these collages!

This challenge has been more liberating in more ways than one. Only using glue, scissors and magazine cut outs, I created a series of collages in ’60s style and finally got the chance to use some of my vintage magazines for art.

Collage Tutorial 7. On a Prayer. Vintage Photos. Postcards..

IMG_20131114_133521

A new collage using vintage postcards and photos. I used a beautiful Japanese prayer card a square of gold cardboard from a box of French chocolates, a vintage photograph of Mt. Fuji and orangy twine with a tiny cut- out from a vintage postcard. Handwritten words on Japanese paper.

A Japanese friend of mine translated the prayer card for me.

It’s an ancient prayer for a well balanced, happy life.

Collage Tutorial 5. Working with Textiles.

Another abstract composition created with fabrics. I pretty much gravitate more towards abstraction ideas in my work, rather than representation , as this is how I see the world…

For this piece I used a canvas board with a layer of aged cotton canvas glued on top. Next a layer of hand-dyed, aged scrim torn and tattered. Another piece of canvas and vintage tablecloth scrap. I then attached a vintage button with old string and kept going over the piece, sewing in between in areas, finishing with some mark-making using a textile pen.
